Many people think about DIY waxing because a salon feels awkward, the cost adds up, or they simply want to do it on their own time. It looks easy to start, but difficulty varies a lot by area. This guide from Linh Lan Waxing in District 1, Saigon covers the pros and cons of DIY waxing, which areas are easiest to start with, what you need, and what to watch out for.

DIY waxing starts with having the right supplies.
01

What is DIY waxing?

It means removing hair with wax by yourself, without a professional. Some people try legs, arms, underarms, even the bikini line, but if it is your first time, start with an area that is easy to reach and simple in shape.

Pros and cons of DIY waxing

Pros

  • Cost: A kit can be reused, so it may cost less than salon visits.
  • Time: No appointment needed. You can do it whenever you like.
  • Comfort: You can treat areas you would rather not show to anyone.

Cons

  • Pain: If your angle and speed are not practised, it can hurt more.
  • Skill: At first, hair often breaks or some is left behind.
  • Skin irritation and burns: Wax that is too hot or repeated passes can cause redness, burns or inflammation.
03

Which area should you start with?

  • Legs and arms: The easiest. The area is large, so you usually work quickly with strips (wax paper).
  • Underarms: The skin is sensitive, so hard wax is often used. Pulling in the wrong direction can easily break the hair.
  • Bikini and Brazilian: The hardest. The skin is thin and the angle is awkward, so you need a mirror and a lot of practice.

For any area, wait until hair is at least 0.5 cm long. Wax can then remove it from the root more easily. If the hair is too short, wax cannot grip it.

04

What you need

  • Wax kit: Choose from hard wax, soft wax or sugaring.
  • Wax warmer: Melts the wax to a suitable temperature.
  • Spatula (stick): To apply wax evenly.
  • Strips: Cloth or paper needed with soft wax.
  • Soothing gel or cream: To calm the skin afterwards.
  • Mirror: Essential for sensitive areas.

Check these before you start

  • Temperature: Wax that is too hot can burn. Test it on the inside of your wrist first.
  • Hair length: 0.5 to 1 cm is about right.
  • Skin condition: Avoid cuts, inflamed skin or badly sunburnt areas.
  • Cleanup: Wax can end up in unexpected places, so keep oil or a cleanser ready to wipe it off.

When to consider a salon instead

For small, sensitive areas such as the bikini line or Brazilian, for thick hair or large areas, or if you are worried about skin irritation, it may be safer to leave it to a professional. At Linh Lan Waxing we use strips for large areas (arms, legs) to keep treatment quick, and hard wax for small, sensitive areas such as the bikini line, Brazilian and beard. We choose the method by area and your situation. If your skin is irritated after waxing, we finish with cooling air (about -30°C). Therapists wear masks and medical-grade gloves and use single-use sticks, and tools are kept in a UV steriliser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which area is easiest for DIY waxing?

Legs and arms, because they are large and easy to see. Save the bikini line and Brazilian for last.

Does DIY waxing hurt?

Pain depends on the area and the person. If your direction or speed is off, it can hurt more.

What is the difference between hard wax and soft wax?

Hard wax is removed as it is once it sets, so it is used on small, sensitive areas such as underarms. Soft wax is removed with a strip and is often used on larger areas.
